OTTAWA SUN (Ontario) 11 July 03 Gators back in the swim (Nelly Elayoubi)
Fingers? Check.
Arms and legs? Check.
What could have been a disaster went smoothly for Paul "Little Ray" Goulet when he, along with a zookeeper, moved two American alligators -- both just over seven feet long and both weighing about 200 lb. -- to a larger home.
Stewart, eight, and Chase, 10, have been at Little Ray's Reptile Adventure since it opened two and a half years ago.
It was time for the the two alligators, expected to grow even bigger, to move to a new home equipped with a deep swimming area and pebbled landing.
Stewart and Chase have been mating in the last few weeks and as Goulet and his assistant Matt Korhonez approached the alligators, Stewart began hissing and grunting as he marked his territory. It was his way of "protecting his girlfriend".
"Up until a year ago Chase was the more aggressive one. Now that they're mating it's the opposite," Goulet said.
Poking Chase with a pole, the two were able to guide her out of her place in the water to tackle her.
Goulet pinned Chase against the glass window with his leg as Korhonez tackled her tail. Goulet then locked his arms around her jaw and the two hoisted her out of the pen, down a hall past a group of visitors and into her new home.
"That's awesome to see her swim like that," said Korhonez, adding it's been four years since the alligators swam in deep water.
Stewart proved to be the challenge. He immediately began thrashing in the water and hissed loudly with his mouth agape as they approached him.
With sweat beading on the men's foreheads, Goulet tackled the alligator which began to crawl toward the water, while Korhonez grabbed his tail. They rushed him to his new home with Chase.
Goulet hailed yesterday as the zoo's best day since opening.
