WINNIPEG FREE PRESS (Manitoba) 05 July 03 Exotic snake discovered on North Kildonan street
Upon hearing that an exotic snake was found loose in the city, the word that came to mind for most Winnipeg residents would probably not be cute. But Winnipeg Humane Society spokeswoman Aileen White insists that the small snake, captured by police in North Kildonan Tuesday night, is "extremely cute, very friendly."
She said the snake was obviously a pet used to being handled by humans.
"He liked to rest on my nose while I was holding him, his tongue tickling between my eyebrows," she said of the approximately 50-centimetre snake.
The vibrant orange and black snake was found on a sidewalk where he had gone to sun himself once he got cold.
The reptile is a corn snake, a species of snake that is not native to Manitoba. It is found in subtropical and temperate regions of North America, Europe and Asia.
The snakes are friendly and make very popular pets. They rarely grow longer than 1.5 metres in adulthood. The captured snake was very young, and therefore its gender could not be determined.
The humane society has received several calls from people who had heard about the snake and wanted to claim it. White said the society is still checking out those claims and hopes to have the snake home in the next couple of days.
