James,

Assuming you're a resident of Ontario, you must purchase a hunting outdoors card with a small game tag- currently $57 for 3 years, but more if you get a fishing license as well (up to $120 for 3 year 'sport' fishing tag).

However, in order to get a hunting outdoors card, you must pass the Hunter Education course (safety, etc.), unless you can show that you have hunted in the past and are experienced. Generally this course is combined with a Canadian Firearms Safety Course, which upon completion allows you to apply for a Firearms Possession & Acquistion license. Cost for the combined course runs upwards of $180, and takes a whole weekend, or can be done in some cases over a succession of evenings.

How hard is it? Not very hard. The course material is pretty basic, and the exams are multiple choice, with a pratical component. If you fail, you can also rewrite the exam, but not on the same day.

It is a fairly decent investment of time and money, though.

Regards,

Jeff Hathaway
